THE SOCIETY

Sixty members, fifteen volunteers, and a building that was once a stable.

The Bulls & District Historical Society Inc. runs the museum. Everyone you meet here is a volunteer, and everything on the shelves was donated by someone from the district.

A CHRONICLE

An old stables on High Street.

Six moments in the order they happened — the building, the horse, and the fifteen volunteers who keep it open.

  1. Ic.1910The building goes up as a stables on High Street.
  2. II1920Colonel Powles brings Bess home from the war — one of only four New Zealand horses to return.
  3. III1934Bess dies on Flock House land and is buried there, under a memorial Powles built himself.
  4. IV2001The museum is established.
  5. V2007The Society buys the old stables at 85 High Street and the museum moves in.
  6. VITodaySixty members, fifteen volunteers, no paid staff, open seven days and by appointment.
